Born in 1847 in Alabama, USA, Bridgman received his artistic training in 1870 at the workshop of the acclaimed artist Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris, which was a thriving hub of arts and culture at the time. Since 1866, Bridgman permanently settled in the French capital and embarked on a series of exploratory journeys across North Africa, including Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt.
