Minister of Economy and Canadian Ambassador Emphasize Opportunities and Promising Prospects for Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

On Friday, December 13, 2024, Minister of Economy and Planning Samir Abdelhafidh met with Lorraine Diguer, the Canadian Ambassador to Tunisia.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss the existing cooperation between Tunisia and Canada and explore ways to further strengthen it, particularly in economic and developmental areas, serving the mutual interests of both countries.

Minister Abdelhafidh expressed his satisfaction with the progress achieved in economic cooperation over recent years, particularly in terms of direct investment, trade exchange, and technical cooperation. He highlighted the diversity of programs related to human development and social advancement, which are being implemented in partnership with some United Nations agencies.

The Minister also expressed his aspiration to expand and enhance these programs and suggested exploring the possibility of establishing a new mechanism—whether technical or financial— in cooperation with relevant UN agencies to support community enterprises. He emphasized the potential of these enterprises to create new job opportunities and generate wealth.

For her part, Ambassador Lorraine Diguer reaffirmed the Canadian government's commitment to further developing bilateral cooperation. She noted the availability of opportunities and growing interest, particularly in high-value-added sectors for direct investment. Additionally, she highlighted the potential for enhancing trade exchange and technical cooperation, given the increasing demand for Tunisian expertise in various fields.
